Digital Doze - Insightful and commonsense ideas
only on this blog!
I often get calls and also questions on LinkedIn asking me for suggestions and information on how to get a job. Often, the calls are from students who are doing MBA and also graduates who are in different stages of their student life. From the call I could feel that they are a worried lot, not knowing the career path.
After the call, I wonder why MBA institutions and colleges are still way behind in giving proper guidance to students? WHY, why, why? Before I dig those why, let me explain few aspects of today's job scenario. We're in a time when many of the jobs are getting automated by machines, computers. We see how cash deposit machines and ATM has reduced the number of bank employees and how online commerce has reduced the footprint in shopping malls. So, it's in this context that you're trying to get placed. It's now a plain truth that companies are looking for skills more than just degree. What does this mean? In simple words, your skill will take your far than just having a Bcom or MBA degree. Gone are the days, when a MBA degree was a guarantee for a job. Now, every other student is either a graduate, a MBA grad or an engineering student. So, it's a place of stiff competition for every opening that's open in the market. After completing your degree or MBA, you're competing against students who are like you or better than you in terms of qualification, but who are strong in certain skills. Next, it's time to sharpen those skills which can help you in a job. What are the skills which are sought after in a typical eCommerce or a digital marketing company? 1) Strong written communication skill 2) Capacity to become a team player. ( Oral communication) 3) Mind of an innovator ( Do things differently) After all you're not a machine 4) Skills required for a specific role ( Web content, designer, writer, ideator, PPT, online report, etc) Other tips to gain a foothold in a company Don't worry about the bleak picture painted above. There're multitude of opportunities coming your way. All you need is the skill to stand out from the rest. Start as an Digital Marketing Intern There are many companies in Bangalore, which are offering paid and unpaid internship. This could be the first place to start your journey. So, to get an intern in a reputed company is no easy task. So, before hand try to connect with people who had worked as intern and ask questions regarding the skills sought by the company. Network using LinkedIn When I talk to freshers and ask them about LinkedIn, I often get blank stares. This is mostly true with students from Kerala. It's looks like they aren't aware of such a professional networking site. Sad! I wonder what they are learning in their MBA or B Com program. All they know is Facebook or Whatapp. Recently LinkedIn CEO has visited Bangalore and they have rolled a LinkedIn lite version. This is specifically for people in India where connection speed is often a problem. It's time all students and professionals use this platform of lakhs of people to connect with other professionals and use it learn about opportunities around you.
